عُرفت الجزيرة، Ρόδος باللغة اليونانيّة، بهذا الإسم تاريخياً ويعني في اليونانية القديمة "الورد الجورية" وقد لُفِظَت "رودون" ῥόδον قديماً؛ ثُمَّ صار لفظها رودي ρόδι باليونانية الحديثة وتعني "الرمّانة".
